Might need a new bike

It seems that my bike isn't good enough for this ride. Or at least that's what two experienced biker friends are telling me. I got it at McWhinnies 2 years ago - it's a Raleigh hybrid - something like the portage:

I've never been a serious biker - nor have I really spent alot of time on a bike. I know due to my size and neck/shoulder/back problems - I don't want a bike where I'm all bent over. I need to be sitting up as much as possible.
Do you experienced bikers have any tips on what kind of bike would be best or what I should be looking for in a bike?
Thanks!
Diane

With back problems I'd get a recumbent.

I just bought a giant avail2, and it goes like stink compared to my hybrid. It's light as a feather and so easy to ride.  Consider a preformance bike. It's more comfortable then it looks.  And the secret is to stretch and stretch and stretch and oh yeah don't forget to stretch. Before during and after.

I'll stick to my 1978 Raleigh. It's a junior racer, I'm not big enough to fit on an adult bike.
I am a bit worried about problems with arthritis, don't want to end up in the sweeper van... I do stretch, 2-3 times a day.
