Inspiration - cross canada bike ride...

Whenever I get overwhelmed with the thought of the ride to Quebec (remember - I'm NOT a cyclist!) I keep reminding myself of this group who are riding their bikes across Canada (7,000) in less than 3 weeks!

I'm volunteering for the day they are in Montreal (Sunday, June 21st) - and there is the possibility of doing a "ride-along" with them on Monday morning (June 22nd). They're too fast for me of course... But check it out - it's an awesome cause (kid's cancer) and I'm sure to get even more inspired once I see them!

I met one of the riders at an event at our school called The Inside Ride. - his name is Mark Weinberg. 60 years old! Wow!

Hope to see you there!
D.

This one is amazing. I wanted to do it next year, but they are asking 4000$ registration fee, and a fund raising of 25000$ All this to be done in 1 year. It is still on my mind but the almost 30K would be very hard to get. But if I had the sponsorship I would do the ride (pass it on).

Yup I've heard about it too, my best buddy has a friend who's wife is doing the ride. Too rich for my blood. I heard you have to be able to ride a minimum speed of 28k an hour for like 8 hours a day for 3 weeks.

The speed is not bad when your in a Pelaton, but its the 30K to raise.

anyhow - if anyone is interested in experiencing it - you can do a "ride-along" on Monday, June 22nd - 7:15 a.m. I think you have to raise $100 - but you get to experience riding with them for anywhere from 10 to 50 km...
Oops - I might be repeating myself... I just know that if I was able to keep up - I would do the ride-along....

Well, that's too much money to raise & I would have a lot of trouble keeping up to that speed. I know it's easier in a peloton, but you still have to lead from time to time. cry

If you'd like something easier to aim for, there's another cross-Canada bike ride that's done every year. The ride starts in Vancouver & ends 7,500 km later in St. John's, Newfoundland.  They don't raise money for anything, so fund-raising's not a problem, and they don't ride so fast or so far each day. They average about 140 km a day.  The only downside is that they take about 70 days to cross the country. That means you'd sort of have to be retired. It costs about $4,000.  If you'd like more information or would just like to dream about it (like me), their website is http://www.tourducanada.com/

I know someone who's been on the trip, and he said, "It's the experience of a lifetime.  You have to do it".  He also said, "After the first week, you're in shape, and then you hit the Rockies".   Well, it must be fun coming back down.smile

I don't think I'll ever have the opportunity to actually do it, but it's nice to dream.  At least it's within my capabilities, physically & monetarily.

well I went to meet them today at Angrignon shopping centre. I asked Mark Weinberg if he had any advice. First was to get a good road bike - ok we'll have to let that one go - it's not happening - I have the bike I have and that's what I'm using...
Only other suggestions - GOOD BIKE SHORTS and BUM BUTTER!!!
I've got that covered too.
He also said - if you can do 130 - you can do 260... I know many people have said this but I like hearing it! It's reassuring seeing my longest weekend so far is only 177... (this weekend...) Only one more serious biking weekend left...

thanks BW! As my Dad reminded me last night - I can be mighty stubborn and if I get in my head that I'm doing something - I'm most probably going to do it!

ME TOO! I'm riding every meter of this ride. My Mom passed away a year and a half ago from complications after breast cancer surgery so this ride is for her.

Diane, you will certainly make it. I can feel the determination in your words. Also, I've been sort of keeping track of your progress & I must say it's quite impressive. I'm sure you'll make everyone who knows you proud.

When you're riding with others, you will automatically find yourself pushing not to fall behind, & that's a powerful incentive. I've done many long rides (up to 240 km per day), and if I can offer some advice, it would be not to worry too much about your speed. No matter how slowly you're going, as long as you're moving, you're making some progress, so just don't stop too much.

Who knows, we could meet in Quebec City.
