Looks like the weather is going to be nice to us. Please check back near the end of the week for a update. Looking forward to seeing you all out for a nice ride in the country side.
It is NOT looking good for Saturday. We need to train riding in the rain (people from last year know that) but Training in the Rain when it is only 8c, is NOT FUN. So, I will keep the RIDE "ON" just to see if the weather changes, if it does NOT Rain, we will ride. If not, I will plan it for the following week April 24th. Same Place, Same Time, Same, well you get the idea. You can also check the Facebook group "The Ride to Conquer Cancer - 2010".
question - are you guys all roadies? I have back problems and can't take the geometry of a road bike so I ride a hybrid. What is your average speed on your rides? Depending on the hills, I ride at about 25kph. I'm wondering if I could fit in.
Hello Patrice, there are many types of riders, Road, Hybr, Moutain, Tricycle :D The most important thing is that you come out and join in on the fun. As for speed, I am sure that there is many other people that ride at that speed, and a average speed of 25k is very good. Keep up the good work.
Also, if there is RAIN, the ride will be off until the following Saturday.
Unfortunately, even if it wasn't going to rain, I'm not available this Saturday, but maybe some other time.
Have you done the ride from Chambly to Granby? Could be a good one, on the regional bike path as opposed to la route verte. I've never done it but am considering it.
hope to ride with you soon.
cheers,
Patrice (by the way, it's Ms. Patrice - weird, but true :0)
Well looking out the window this Friday Morning, looks like we won't be riding on Saturday. BUT!!! Next week we ride. AND!!! It is the Day before the Grand Prix Ste-Martin, one of the biggest races to start the Cycling Season. Last year 650 cyclist rode in the Same Circuit that we will be riding in. (Just that they pro riders do it average speed of 50k/hr) BUT we still did the same route as the pro riders.
also...
Fantastic turnout at the Cycle 101 at the JGH, lots of new people. Can't wait to see them out at of of the Training Rides. (I tought for sure I was going to see DDK or a Broadway there - LOL)
check back for more updates and cross your fingers for April 24th.
Good call - they're predicting snow in the late afternoon...and I think DDK will agree - we only do rain when its torrential - and if there's a strong headwind on top of that? (guaranteeing a steady pace of 16k/hr) Then oh yeah - we're there!
Speaking of headwind - Im switching from hybrid to road bike this year and adding a tri bar for added positions. That, dropping the bag & carrier in the back and a few lbs of my own - I'll hopefully be flying up those hills! (as opposed to coming to a full stop in the first few meters...ugh) Im trying to stay around $1000 (or under if possible). Any suggestions?
At 1000$ it not be Carbon, but possible Forks and Post. You could try local suppliers. Argon 18 or Opus. But depends on whats near you. But "Mer" you will be FLYING up those hills!!!
hey - sorry I missed you at the 101 - timing didn't work! Nice to know I was being thought of though!!! Yup - ugh for the weather! But Mer - don't forget the thunder and lightning!??! we need that to add to the excitement! That's a ride I'll never forget that's for sure! Thanks again to Broadway for the pit stop and towels!! Sounds like my riding partner is gonna finish a couple of hours ahead of me!?!?! waaaa! But you go girl!! I'm cheering for you all the way!!
As for the Training Ride, I have changed it to April 24th. Date: Saturday, April 24th, 2010 Area: Chateauguay, QC Meet place: Polydium Gym @ 111 Maple Start time: 11:00am Distance: 60km with a break at 15km and a rest stop at 30km Access to washrooms at the halfway point.
Check the Facebook page "The Ride to Conquer Cancer - 2010" for updates or back here on the message board.
I am counting on DDK and MER, to bring the Nice Weather!
Hi Dez, I will certainly try and be there. Went to Le Yeti this Saturday, and while the man was explaining to me what the DE VINCI / Silverstone SL2 WF (http://www.devinci.com/bikes/browse#5_7_11) ($1050) could do..I could hear a little voice coming from the GIANT / Avail 2 (http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-ca/bikes/model/avail.2/5406/37760/) ($1199) calling my name.
Either way its above my price range and I will need to sell my body for the next month (oh sigh..again) to buy it..but its calling me like a new pair of shoes to women, or a car to men..or vice versa..well you get my point-I even felt a little sad as I left the store without it -(si-i-igh) it was love.
Looking at the stats - do you see a huge difference?
Oh and did I mention it matches with my cycling shoes?!!
Hey Sophie, Both bikes seem to have about the same type of equipment, but the GIANT would be my bet. But your not going to get anything with a little quality under 1000$ anyway. Sharon has a GIANT. Sharon?
But you have to look at the shifters, gears, this is the most important. (color is last, sorry).
oh so purty!!! and Dez - it's all about matching the shoes or the outfit! Come on - we're still girls!! Sophie - I'm going to ask the most important question - HOW DOES IT FEEL!?!?!?!? Did you get to sit on it on a trainer for a while!??!
Hi Dez, Thanks for arranging this. Just to be sure:
Date: Saturday, April 24th, 2010 Area: Chateauguay, QC Meet place: Polydium Gym @ 111 Maple Start time: 11:00am Distance: 60km with a break at 15km and a rest stop at 30km Access to washrooms at the halfway point. Weather permitting
Contact: Desmond @ rtcc@dspharwood.com
All I have to do is show up and ride. Is the group leaving at 11:00 (so we show up at 10:45)?
We will be leaving the POLYDIUM at 11am, so please show up to give yourself enough time to get ready, etc. I will give a little "where we are going", and then off we go.
For everyone. The ride will start at the Polydium, cycle down to the river, along the river, after that section there is about 500+ meters, of really not very good road, paved, but not good at all, speed should be kept to a "slow". Once we cross blvd Rene Leveque (Hyw 30), "don't worry, we do it all the time" then the road gets very nice and smooth. This is when you can really enjoy the ride.
Don't forget: Spare tube, pump, water bottle....
If you have any questions please contact me at ride@dspharwood.com
Thanks, Dez - once we're on the other side of the mercier bridge, about how long is the drive? Would you believe that I've only been to Chateauguay once in the 30 years I've lived in Montreal, and that was years ago...I guess I haven't lived!
Once you cross the Bridge (look out for the 1000 speed bumps) Keep Right, Direction Chateauguay, it's about 4-5Kms, But, once you hit the FIRST Traffic light (Zellers, Petro Canada) this is St-Francis Street, Turn Right, 7th Stop Sign (Should be) MAPLE BLVD, Turn Left, take the Crurvy Road, Stop Sign, Pass a Couch Tard, Enter Parking Lot JUST before the Police Station.
Just decided that I want to check out a bike path between Chambly and Granby this Sunday. It'll be a virgin ride - I've never done this regional trail before. It goes through Marieville and Rougemont. I'm not really sure how long it is - somewhere around 90km round trip, I would think. If anyone has done this path before, I'd appreciate some tips. I'm not quite sure where the trail head is but will try and firm that up and post it by Saturday. There are plenty of shopping centres in Chambly where we can park...
Depending on how hard the Saturday ride w/ Dez is, I may turn around at Rougemont, so be forewarned.
Anyone interested, let me know. It'll be posted on the training calendar by tomorrow, hopefully.
Hi Ptardif There's a site called (mapmyride) and it might be able to help you figure out where you're going but it only maps the roads, not the bike paths. Its a great site.
The itinerary for my Sunday ride is changing somewhat, still departing from Chambly, but going along the Canal to St-Jean then off to Farnham and back. Couldn't find enough info about the other route so opted for something a bit more known for now. Meet-up is at 9:30 at the parking lot in Parc des Ateliers (at the start to the Chambly Canal) - departure at 9:45.
Alright, alright, So it wasnt 60Kms as advertised . BUT, just think you got in your first 80 (79.15Kms) ride of the season. Thank you for everyone that who came out on a beautiful sunny day. Too bad for DDK and MER, hopefully they will be able to come out the next time.
I will defiantly post more training rides. But keep in mind May 16th DDO Civic Center Ride. 50 or 25Km Ride.
Thank you too Dez even if the 60 k ride somehow streached out to an 80 k ride. It was good and you're right it's good to get a big ride under our belts and it's still early in the season. Fun and (groan) even the sprints.
P.S. Missed you guys too Mermaid and DDK, hope to see ya all May 16.

Sorry-have been battling a major head cold since last Thursday. Went out for a leisurely 35km Sunday around Lachine Canal, ice bridge, casino, Ile St-Hélène, casino bridge to home. Happy to report PURPLE LUCY held up quite nicely - perhaps she knows Im saving my sous for a road bike and is simply putting up a nice front to deter my intentions to replace her this summer? Hmmmrph.
Nonetheless- paid for it dearly on Monday as fever struck again with a vengeance. Regaining my vision and feeling in my face as we speak-happy to report we are now down to hacking-to the great pleasure of my co-workers..cough,cough. Its a-a-all under control. Planning another leisure ride this weekend if the weather is agreeable and upping my distance to 50km. Only 10 weekends to go people!! WOOHOO!!
Sharon if it's like the training/celebration ride in the fall - then it's going over the bridge to Ile Bizard and then doing either half of the island (25 km) or all of it (50 km)... no Ile Perrot or Ste. Annes...
Yahoo-good ride Serge and Dez. Thanks for all the security too. It was a sight to see all of us riding on the Lakeshore and St Charles with a police escort. It looked like we were sending a message to the drivers out there I hope they get it and drive safer around us. Us too! We must be careful too.
